How to Use Custom Stained Glass in Your Home and Workplace

We’ve discussed a number of ways to use glass around your home and workplace, but today we’re sharing an idea that stands out just a little more than usual.

Stained glass is a beautiful alternative to using regular glass. No matter where you are using it, it can add a pop of color and texture in an area that could otherwise look bland and ordinary. The popularity of custom stained glass has grown over recent years, as it’s a unique and beautiful way to add some personality to a home.

You can use stained glass in a number of ways around your home or office, and we’re here to tell you a few of our favorites.

Shower Doors

Using stained glass in your bathroom, your shower door specifically, is a popular and relatively inexpensive way to add some personality to your bedroom. You can choose matching colors in the bathroom, or go bold and pick an accent color to make the shower area the star of the space. Not only does it create a beautiful look for any bathroom, but there are actually two ways you can use stained glass when it comes to your shower door.

First, you can add stained glass designs to your pre-existing glass shower doors. You can do this by attaching adhesive-free window film treatments, which can be found in hobby stores or online. You can also have stained glass be a part of your shower doors from the start, having colored glass swirled into the doors as they are made. Both provide an interesting look, as well as some added privacy!

Kitchen Backsplash

When it comes to the kitchen, granite is king. Homeowners prefer granite over almost anything these days. While granite is beautiful and provides a smooth and sophisticated look to a kitchen, stained glass can also do the same, yet is often forgotten.

A custom backsplash in your kitchen offers a number of perks that products like granite don’t. First of all, it’s less expensive. The worst part about remodeling is going over budget, but you don’t have to worry about that with glass touches. A stained glass backsplash can also be designed specifically to match your kitchen, unlike granite which is just cut from rock and comes as is.

Stained Glass Dividers

Stained glass dividers are an excellent way to add privacy to a large workspace, especially if you work in an area with lots of desks in one big room. A little bit of privacy can help boost productivity in the workplace by minimizing distractions, but a stained glass divider won’t make you feel like you’re blocked off from the world.

Not only are glass dividers functional on their own, but adding color and texture to a workspace can improve people’s moods. We know that we’d rather be surrounded by beautiful stained glass dividers than standard, grey ones. You can even get stained glass that incorporates the same colors your business uses, tying your brand right into the office.

Basement Windows

Basement windows aren’t something we usually think about decorating, let alone think about at all. They’re typically visible on the side of your house and towards the ground, which isn’t exactly a spot you want to be putting a lot of money into. However, a stained glass window provides a pop of color to an unexpected place, and offers a few benefits you may not have thought of.

A glass window leading into a basement can often be a red flag for prying eyes. If you use stained glass on your basement windows, it can prevent a home invasion, or at least nosy neighbors from checking our your business!

Stained windows can also provide a natural cooling system for your basement by refracting heat.

With everything stained glass can do for you, we hope you consider it the next time you have glass installed in your home or workplace.

How to Cut Glass Mirrors

Mirrors are one of the best accent pieces to have in your house because they serve multiple purposes, both in a fashionable and a functional way. Aside from their obvious use, mirrors can be a beautiful way to decorate your home. They open spaces up, make rooms appear larger than they are, and can be an eye-catching piece of artwork on your wall.

Sometimes, using mirrors as a decoration in your home requires some elbow grease, especially if you are diving into a DIY project. We can tell you the right way (and the safe way!) to cut mirrors for whatever you want to create, from large, sit-down tables to crafts with the kids.

Start with a large, clean work area. Because of any mess that may occur, you might want to take this project on in either your garage or backyard.

Lay your mirror on a flat surface like a work bench or table.

Before you start wielding your glass cutter, mark exactly where on the mirror you want to cut. This will make your project easier once you’ve started. That way, you’re cutting down (no pun intended) on the mistakes you’ll make with your design! Use a tape measurer and a dry-erase pen, as the marker will come off the mirror easily once you’re done.

Align a straight edge along the marks that you made with the dry erase pen. This will ensure that the cuts you make with be as straight as possible and right where you want them.

Holding the straight edge firmly in one hand, take your glass cutter and press the cutting wheel to the mirror. Apply even, steady pressure and simply cut along the lines you marked with the dry erase marker. By doing this, you’ll create a small crack in the mirror.

One the initial cuts have been made, hold the mirror over the edge of the surface it’s resting on and gently tap along the cut line with the blunt end of your glass cutter. It should separate the mirror into two pieces safely and easily. Repeat until you have all the pieces of mirror that you want to use.

If you want to refine the edges where the glass has been cut, use some fine sandpaper and rub the edges of the glass gently, just until it’s smooth.

That’s all, folks!

Domed Skylights

Do you ever feel like turning on your lights during the day is a waste of electricity? Want to find an alternative that could save you money, while keeping your home or business well-lit during the day? Instead of relying on lamps for light during day time hours, save money and electricity by installing a domed skylight in your ceiling.

Unlike a traditional skylight that you’re probably used to seeing, a domed skylight features a (you guessed it) domed glass that provides a unique look. People are so used to seeing flat skylights, so why not make your ceiling a talking point by standing out. As well as standing out visually, a domed skylight can provide a few advantages that a flat skylight doesn’t.

One advantage to installing a domed skylight rather than a flat one is that they actually tend to function better than traditional ones. When it rains, water normally sits on the flat surface of a skylight, which not only blocks light, but can create dirt and dust on the glass itself. A domed skylight, however, is shaped so that any water will run off the surface and onto the roof, where it runs into the gutters and can’t be seen. Essentially you’re having Mother Nature clean your windows for you!

Also, many people don’t know that domed skylights are actually easier to replace that flat ones. This can benefit a homeowner or business owner in case your skylight gets damaged, or if you simply want to switch it out for a different one, maybe with a pattern or tint.

Speaking of patteners, domed skylights can be incredibly beautiful when embellished, and it's shape provides for more opportunity in regards to decoration and etching. There are an endless array of designs and patterns are available for you choosing, even custom ones that will add an even more special touch to your home.

If you’re thinking of making an interesting change in your home, consider a domed skylight. Lesser known than a regular skylight or other interesting window installations, a domed skylight will give your ceiling depth and act as a piece of built-in art for your home.

Keep Your Glass Clean

We have windows and glass walls installed because we like being able to see what is on the other side. It’s undeniable that few things are more beautiful that floor-to-floor windows looking out onto a cityscape or a mountain view.

Unless, of course, those windows are covered in dirt.

Glass windows, whether on a home, car, or office, are often exposed to a lot of filth, and after a while, it starts to build up. We’re here to give you some advice on how to keep your glass windows cleaner for longer, and with very little effort.

If there happens to be a lot of loose dirt or dust on your windows, take a portable vacuum cleaner to the glass. This will get rid of a lot of the build up instantly, and will make the job easier when you start spraying cleaning product on the windows.

Once you’ve vacuumed up any loose dirt, it’s time to wash the glass itself. While using store bought product may seem like the easy thing to do, these solutions can contain harsh chemicals that could damage your glass. Plus, they get expensive after a while. You can make a simple and effective cleaning solution with products you already have at home.

Create a homemade cleaning solution of 90% water and 10% vinegar. That’s all! Spray the surface of the glass lightly in, then using a clean cloth, wipe the dirty area until clean. Spray the solution in small areas at a time to avoid a mess. Once the glass is rid of dirt, rinse the windows with water and dry with a clean, lint-free cloth.

For best results, start at the top of the glass and wipe the windows from side to side while drying them, working your way down. An up and down motion is more likely to cause streaking and leave water spots.

Before you run off to clean every glass surface in sight, keep in mind there are a few things you should NEVER do when cleaning glass windows. Despite what you may have read in the past, you shouldn’t use abrasive scrubbing brushes, putty knives or razor blades to remove dirt. If you do, you run risk scratching and chipping the glass, and you don’t want to turn a routine cleaning job into an expensive replacement job.

Also keep in mind the product you’re using. If you buy a cleaning product from the store, make sure the solution isn’t petroleum based or have too many chemicals, as these could damage the surface and seal of the glass.

With a little maintenance and care for your windows, cleaning them won't take more than a couple of minutes, and they'll stay sparkling.

How to Repair Cracked or Chipped Glass

If you’ve ever driven a car or lived in a home with windows (both likely), you’ve probably experienced the unpleasantness of a broken window. Whether your windshield has been chipped due to flying rocks, or the windows in your home have a crack or two, we have a few quick and easy fixes for the beatings your windows take.

When working with damaged glass, make sure to always wear a durable pair of gloves, like heavy duty rubber kitchen gloves. No matter how small the damage may be, take precaution. It can be hard to spot a shard of glass sticking out from a window, and protection can prevent a potential injury.

Once you’re equipped to work with the broken glass, make sure it’s clean, especially if the window was damaged by something dirty, like a rock. Ball up a moist cloth towel and wipe the entire area gently until any particles of dust or dirt have been removed. If you can’t get it clean this way, use a glass-cleaning solution to do the job.

Now that you’ve prepped the glass for fixing, it’s time to get it done!

For a super easy and very temporary fix, think simple. Use a strip of strapping tape to completely cover the damaged area. Any heavy duty tape will do, but we recommend using strapping tape over others such as masking tape because of its waterproof properties. Smooth the tape against the glass, making sure it’s secure. This will prevent the crack or chip from spreading until you can get the glass permanently fixed.

For a longer lasting solution, take some clear nail polish and dab a thin layer to fill the damaged glass. Allow the polish to dry, and then repeat the process, allowing time to dry in between, until the crack or hole is completely filled. Once the glass is even and sealed, the damage will be practically invisible.

If you’re willing to go the extra step to really fix that window, here’s the option for you. You’ll need a plastic putty knife and silicone sealer. Place a small glob of the sealant onto the crack, and using the knife, smooth the product down until it’s flat and blends with the rest of the glass. Wipe the blade with a paper towel, then smooth one more time for an extra smooth finish.

These methods are, for the most part, for small cracks and chips. If your window is in disrepair to the point of no return, or if you aren’t sure, give us a call Santa Fe Glassat (303) 777-4491. We’re here to help!!
